Minutes after news broke that Google’s Marissa Mayer would be leaving the company to become Yahoo’s next CEO, her name was trending on Twitter. Reaction to the news grew after Fortune reported Monday evening that Mayer is pregnant with her first child.

Mayer’s job change and pregnancy have renewed attention to discussions about women in tech and about whether women can, in fact, “have it all.”

    It is quite telling that journalists are obsessing over Mayer’s status as a mother / role model for women while ignoring the more important issue: That she’s going to be heading up a big news organization although she’s a big Obama donor.

    People currently without kids who are going to have them think they can have it all. They just don’t have kids yet. And there’s no way you can know what it’s like until it happens.
