Brightcove offers HTML5 video for iPad

Video distribution platform Brightcove will provide basic support for HTML5 video in time for this weekend’s iPad launch. The company joins other video providers, including YouTube and Vimeo, as well as content creators such as CBS, who are known to be experimenting with HTML5. Brightcove’s immediate implementation will be limited at first; CEO Jeremy Allaire said that advertising, analytics and social sharing features will be rolled out over 9 months.

Video providers are moving to HTML5 because the iPad doesn’t support Adobe Flash, the default video playback technology. Despite the recent debates over Apple’s decision not to incorporate Flash on the tablet, if major video providers continue to move quickly to HTML5, the issue may become moot for both consumers and publishers.
