Ex-FBI chief Hoover treated Post-Dispatch warily

“In your dealings with the St. Louis Post-Dispatch you must be most careful and most discreet,” J. Edgar Hoover wrote in a 1956 memo — one of the many FBI memos, letters and other records that the paper obtained. (A Post-Dispatch editorial once likened the FBI to Russia’s secret police and suggested that Hoover was using the agency to push himself into the public spotlight.)
