What happened to The NYTPicker? Anyone know?

The last post on the site that called itself “a daily look inside the newspaper of record” appeared on March 27 with the headline, “Another One Bites The Dust…” (It was referring to the Times Magazine’s “Lives” feature.) The last tweet was on that day, too. An email sent to the site on Wednesday hasn’t been answered. Do you know what happened to the Times watchdog? Tell us in comments or send me an email. || Sept. 8, 2009: New York Times deletes post claiming David Blum is The NYTPicker.

UPDATE: At least one Romenesko reader hasn’t ruled out Blum as The NYTPicker. That person points out: “In January 2011, he started as editor of Kindle Singles. While the NYTPicker’s last post was in March, as you note, you’ll see that regular activity on the site dropped off at the end of last year, just before Blum assumed full-time work with Amazon.” I sent this observation to Blum — check your Columbia U. account, David — and asked for comment. I’ll post it when/if it arrives.

Oh, I’m all for a site devoted to criticizing the NYT (though if it’s a political critique, I probably won’t read it). But I tend to be against sites (or blog comments sections, for that matter) where some weasel cowers in the shadows of anonymity to hurl insults and impugn the reputations of his betters without fear of repercussion. NYTPicker does (did?) some good stuff, but too often, I pictured the writer(s) as I always picture anonymous Internet cacklers — as this guy: http://cdn2.holytaco.com/wp-content/uploads/images/2009/11/ICW-3.jpg. Or this guy: http://www.blameitonthevoices.com/2009/06/internet-commenter-magazine.html

Unless your life would otherwise be in danger and you’re revealing some kind of crucial information, the only reason for you to remain anonymous is that you’re a pathetic coward who wants to hurl invective without consequence. It means you have convictions (or, more often, shallow opinions) that you strongly feel *must* be expressed, but not the courage to stand by them.

Let’s see Mitchell expand upon his comment. What about the site did he object to?

I thought some of the NYTPicker posts, such as the dissection of a thinly sourced trend story, and discussion of the NYT’s odd factual flubs, to be illuminating.

Delete Mitchell’s comment, please. It’s noise.

Maybe NYTPicker developed a human conscience?
