To a 1-year-old, print magazine seems like a broken iPad

YouTube | MEDIA Schiff
What does it really mean to be a digital native? This video shows a baby playing intuitively with an iPad, then struggling to understand why a print magazine doesn’t respond the same way. As the video’s creator explains, “For my 1-year-old daughter, a magazine is an iPad that does not work. It will remain so for her whole life.”

Actually, now that I look at this again, she knows how to turn a page. Jump cuts make it look otherwise. She’s being exploited by adults who wish to make a tired point. (And we all fell for it.)

By now, her parents should be reading to her. Don’t they know any better?

I feel sad for this child who will not learn the joy of reading before expecting things to glow and react to her touching them. What if computers become unaffordable, or the electric goes out?

That’s very cute, but not exactly predictive.  The baby has experience with an iPad but not with a magazine.  By the time she turn 4 I’m sure she will know how a magazine and a book operate.  I do wonder how she will value them though.  Will a book be more valuable because it’s different, or God-forbid, novel (pun intended), or will it be of less value because it only has one story in it and no interactive elements.  Should be interesting to see what this generation will value in 20 years.

I can relate. When I was young, i thought a photograph was a broken TV.

This story is sad.  Several generations of children exposed first to ipads instead of books will grow up reading books on ebook readers.. and that is the best case senario.  That scares me greatly and reminds me of the book 1984 which is one of the most frightening books I have ever read right next to Brave New World and We.

One day this child will be a fantastic button-pusher! You must be so proud!
