How critics feel about using stars to rate movies

Wall Street Journal
* Roger Ebert (Sun-Times): “I don’t know where the stars come from, but they’re absurd. Often, people will cite my stars who obviously have not read my review.”
* Gerald Peary (Boston Phoenix): “The apple has been bitten by everybody, and it’s a rotten apple.”
* Sam Sifton (culture editor of NYT, which doesn’t use stars): “We don’t seek to reduce our arguments about a particular piece of art to a number, or letter grade, or golden spatulas, or whatever.”
