Howard is Poynter's director of interactive learning. In addition to teaching, writing and researching online media, he directs News University, an online training portal for journalists, www.newsu.org. In 2002 he was the Institute’s Presidential Scholar.
Finberg leads the Institute's Online Leadership seminars and teaches media habits/consumption in other seminars.
Before joining Poynter, he was the co-founder and managing director of Finberg-Gentry, the Digital Futurist Consultancy [www.digitalfuturist.com], which specializes in helping the media industry, newspapers and emerging companies with strategies, content and revenue development, and publishing technologies.
Before founding Finberg-Gentry, he was a corporate vice president at Central Newspapers, prior to its sale to Gannett Corp. At CNI he managed the company's Internet and technology investments and provided strategic and operational guidance for the company’s print and online efforts.
He served as a director at Phoenix Newspapers, Inc., which publishes The Arizona Republic. At The Republic, Howard led the creation and launch of the award-winning online service, Arizona Central [www.azcentral.com] on the Web and on America Online in early 1995.
He also held senior newsroom management positions at The Republic and at the San Francisco Chronicle and the Chicago Tribune and worked at the San Jose Mercury News, San Francisco Examiner and The New York Times. He established the Chicago Tribune’s graphics desk, one of the first in the country, and was the founding editor of the country’s first syndicated newspaper graphics service.
Howard was honored as the Newspaper Association of America "New Media Pioneer" in 2000. He has served on the board of directors or the advisory boards of several digital companies, including Involve Technology and Waveshift. He currently is on the board of directors for Legacy.com. |

| Howard has been in journalism for 30 years. His resume includes positions with the Chicago Tribune, The New York Times, the San Francisco Chronicle and The Arizona Republic. He was the Presidental Scholar at Poynter in 2002 and joined Poynter full-time in 2003 to direct its e-learning project, News University. |
