Photographic Reporting, Connecting with Communities (G409)
This seminar will focus on ways to develop photographers as integral members of the newsgathering team. You will develop skills that will improve your photographic storytelling. We will help you consider effective ways to find good ideas, develop meaningful documentary stories, and publish them in traditional and non-traditional ways. We will also discuss the need to connect news organizations with their readers, and explore the latest digital imaging technology through hands-on exercises. You’ll also explore the importance of ethical decision-making and increase your diversity awareness and ability to spot visual potential in news coverage.

Newspaper Reporting, Writing & Editing I: Covering the Beat (W401A)
This seminar digs into the special challenges of mining a beat, including defining the beat, developing and maintaining sources, and keeping fresh eyes in a well-traveled beat. Participants will focus on the skills behind powerful reporting and writing and effective editing. As with all writing seminars, you'll learn practical approaches and successful methods that you can take back to the newsroom, with special emphasis on storytelling, deadline writing, ethical decision-making, covering diverse communities, and coaching skills.

In this seminar, participants will learn how to write clearer, stronger stories. You'll get tips on how to coach reporters and photojournalists to tell more memorable stories. You'll also learn new skills to enrich your journalism by using the Internet as a reporting tool.

In this seminar, participants will focus on leadership issues relevant to the people at the very top of the newsroom table of organization. You'll learn how to attract, retain, and motivate employees and how to develop a newsroom culture in which good ethical decisions are made on deadline. You'll get tips on how to improve newsroom writing and Internet research. You'll define and refine your personal leadership style and learn effective strategies for working more effectively with bosses and fellow department heads.

Through practical exercises, participants will learn and apply the fundamentals of graphic design - grids, typography, and color - to see how they improve navigation, readability, and the visual identity of the news product. TV Power Reporting for Reporters & Photojournalists - (B402A)
Participants in this seminar will learn to tell clearer, more focused stories. You'll enhance your skills in developing characters in your stories and get tips on how to maximize the visuals you have to work with. You'll learn to find stories that others miss, to develop a distinctive storytelling style, and to use the Internet to find and enrich stories. You'll learn the skills of ethical decision-making even under deadline and enhance your ability to cope with difficult co-workers. You'll also receive individualized coaching on your work.
