This seminar will focus on ways to develop photographers as integral members of the newsgathering team. You will develop skills that will improve your photographic storytelling. We will help you consider effective ways to find good ideas, develop meaningful documentary stories, and publish them in traditional and non-traditional ways. We will discuss the need to connect news organizations with their readers, and explore the latest digital imaging technology through hands-on exercises. You’ll also explore the importance of ethical decision-making and increase your diversity awareness and ability to spot visual potential in news coverage.

2/29/2004 - 3/5/2004 12/20/2003 Newspaper Reporting, Writing & Editing: Covering the Government Beat (W401B)
The government and politics beat presents special challenges, from source development and information gathering to writing stories that connect readers with the institutions and decision-makers whose actions affect their daily lives. With a national election looming, participants will zero in on best practices for effective government and political reporting, urban affairs, and campaign coverage. As with all writing seminars, you’ll trade successful methods with accomplished visiting faculty and participants familiar with the demands of this vital beat, with special emphasis on storytelling, deadline writing, ethical decision-making, covering diverse and disenfranchised communities, and coaching skills.

3/6/2004 - 3/12/2004 11/1/2003 Poynter Ethics Fellows (EFELL)
Poynter brings together a select group of outstanding journalists – sharp thinkers and gifted practitioners who are committed to excellent and ethical journalism. You will explore key issues including the tensions between jour-nalism and business values, the challenges of covering an increasingly diverse society, and public concerns about invasion of privacy. We’ll anchor the sessions in the real-world issues of the newsroom, connecting ethics to craft and leadership. You will strengthen your ethical decision-making and develop techniques for effectively coaching ethics in your newsroom. The Ethics Fellows will come to St. Petersburg for a week in March 2004 and four days in January 2005. In the interim, they will stay connected with one another and with Poynter faculty to discuss important ethics issues. Fellows may write articles or essays on ethics for Poynter Online and the Poynter Report.

This seminar will focus on your core jobs as a producer. You’ll learn how to write clearer, sharper, and more accurate copy on deadline. You’ll learn the secrets of covering big breaking news and how to improve your “continuing” coverage. You’ll discover ways to efficiently use the Internet to find and enrich stories. You’ll learn how to coach others so they can grow in their own skills. You’ll build skills to make tough ethics calls in the newsroom and develop your leadership voice. And you’ll leave with fresh energy for your work, reminded of why you chose to become a journalist.

You hire and groom journalists, work hard to build a positive newsroom culture, face daily decisions about news content, wrestle with ethical and bottom-line issues, strive every day for excellence – and you sure could use some help. This seminar is designed to provide solid guidance on your leadership style and effectiveness, feedback from your newsroom on your strengths and challenges, a focus on motivating and coaching your staff, and building the diversity and ethical decision-making that leads to excellent journalism. You’ll spend a week focused on your growth, assisted by veteran Poynter faculty and coached by visiting faculty who are top leaders in the industry.

3/28/2004 - 4/2/2004 2/2/2004 TV Power Reporting: Telling Stronger Stories (B402A)
The most important way to attract viewers is to tell stronger, more focused stories. This seminar will help time-pressed reporters and photojournalists find and report memorable and important stories. We will use your ethics case studies to explore the hard issues that journalists routinely face. You'll learn how to use the Internet for finding and enriching stories and you'll receive a CD-ROM full of websites to share with your newsroom. You'll see examples of great work that will inspire and energize you, and you'll get specific feedback and coaching on your work from Poynter faculty and visiting professionals. You'll return to your newsroom with a specific plan of action on how to improve your work beginning on your first day back on the job.

4/18/2004 - 4/23/2004 2/23/2004 Design/Type/Color (G401)
Through practical exercises, participants will learn and apply the fundamentals of graphic design – grids, typography, and color – to see how they improve navigation, readability, and the visual identity of the news product. You’ll increase your understanding of how journalistic principles are the building blocks of the best design work. You’ll explore photographic storytelling and learn to become more analytical about your own work and that of others. Participants will also reflect on collaboration, ethical decision-making, and diversity as part of being an effective colleague in the newsroom.

4/25/2004 - 4/30/2004 2/9/2004 Values & Ethics in the News: Reporting on the Intersection of Morality and Current Events (E413)
Big stories with moral underpinnings – Enron, the Catholic clergy crisis, political scandals, systemic fabrication and plagiarism at The New York Times – leave many journalists grappling for solid footing. Whether your beat is local schools, national politics, or health care, your stories are about values and ethics – how people make choices and how those choices affect others. Understanding how ethics and values frame the topic of the day is the difference between adequate journalism and journalism that makes a difference. In this seminar, you’ll work with Poynter faculty, practicing journalists, and experts from other disciplines. You’ll get a primer in ethical decision-making and practice applying those skills. You’ll learn to bring that level of context and query to every report and every day’s publication.

5/2/2004 - 5/7/2004 3/8/2004 Power Reporting for Public Radio Journalists (B411)
Public radio journalists face many of the same pressures as radio journalists in commercial settings. You’re increasingly being asked to produce more stories with tighter deadlines. In this seminar, you’ll explore the secrets of dynamic radio storytelling, including sound, character development, and crisp, focused writing. You’ll get the tools for ethical decision-making and receive intensive training on how to use the Internet to enrich your reporting. You’ll also discuss how to coach others to higher performance.

5/16/2004 - 5/18/2004 3/22/2004 Poynter Executive Excellence Series: Leading Opinion Pages in Critical Times (MESOP)
The editorial page is the soul of a newspaper, the pivotal place to have civil discourse with readers and to encourage debate on issues that deeply affect them. But how much have editorial pages changed with the passing of time? During this conference, you will share ideas and best practices, identifying those that have made editorial pages stronger. You will focus on ethical decision-making, making pages more accessible to a diverse audience, how to escape age-old design habits, and how to build impact online. You’ll explore the role of editorial cartoonists, the voices you hear or miss on your pages, and the challenges and opportunities of this election year.
