When the photo staff at the Orlando Sentinel was told they’d have to reapply for their jobs last week and that those jobs would be “videocentric,” according to a report from the National Press Photographers Association, “it seemed extremely familiar,” said Andrew Nelles, a Chicago-based freelance photographer, in a phone interview.

Nelles only worked for the Chicago Sun-Times for nine months before he and the entire photo staff were laid off in May of last year. Nelles, who freelanced before that job, was able to bounce back into freelance quickly.

Orlando Sentinel photographers must reapply for jobs

NPPA

The National Press Photographers Association reported Thursday that photographers at the Orlando Sentinel have been told they’ll have to reapply for their jobs, which will largely be “videocentric.”

Todd Stewart, the newspaper’s design, graphics and multimedia editor who is the senior manager responsible for supervising the photography department, told the shooters during a meeting on Monday that the new job definitions will center on video. The gathering was Stewart’s very first meeting with the photography staff.

Editor Mark Russell to leave Orlando Sentinel

Orlando Sentinel | Jim Romenesko

Orlando Sentinel Editor Mark Russell is leaving the paper “as part of a restructuring,” Jason Garcia reports. His responsibilities will pass to Avido Khahaifa, whose title will remain director of content. Khahaifa is also director of content for the Sun Sentinel.

The Tribune Co.-owned newspaper named Russell editor in 2010. He replaced Charlotte Hall, who retired. At the time, Khahaifa said promoting Russell was an “easy decision.” Russell has been with the paper since 2004.… Read more

Orlando Sentinel editor: ‘We chose to cut news pages to help bolster our bottom line’

Orlando Sentinel
Give Mark Russell a few points for honesty. The editor of Orlando Sentinel tells readers that “the move to cut news pages was driven by our need to reduce expenses …[but] we also decided to expand the space for local news — the content we think is most valuable to our readers.” The Tribune-owned paper is reducing news pages two months after the Chicago Tribune announced that it’s adding 40 more news pages a week and said its news hole is larger than it was five years ago.
