Postmedia buys Sun Media’s English-language newspapers


Postmedia Network Canada Corp. will buy Sun Media’s 175 English-language newspapers for $316 million, the companies announced Monday.

The deal includes the Toronto Sun and other Sun papers in Calgary, Winnipeg, Edmonton and Ottawa, and 34 pieces of real estate in three provinces. (Here’s a list of Sun papers.) PostMedia also gets the non-Quebecois iteration of the Web portal Canoe in the deal.

Rob Ford’s brother was addressing journalism class during crack admission

Toronto Councillor Doug Ford appeared before a group of journalism students Tuesday, apparently unaware his brother, the city’s mayor, was confessing to smoking crack.

Councillor Doug Ford told a class of journalism students at Ryerson University that his family had been hounded by the media, comparing the Fords to Princess Diana and journalists to paparazzi, Kim Magi reported on Tuesday in the Toronto Star. He also called the Star the “National Enquirer of the North.”

“Let’s talk about the Toronto Star,” he said. “Everyone says don’t get with a fight with people that buy ink by the barrel and paper by the ton. My theory is, don’t get in a fight with two guys that are willing to come after you and hold you to account.” Read more


Toronto Sun misspells ‘Monday’ on front page

Somebody at the Toronto Sun is having a very bad start to the week, after some promotional copies of the paper went out with a front page typo:
