It's difficult to think of the effect that Grandpa Tommy had on my life and not instantly smile and cry at the same time. When I was little he called me "Chief Running Bear" when we played cowboys and indians, always letting me win. We rode bikes around the neighborhood when he visited, and he always took me to McDonald's for ice cream, always, he loved McDonalds. When I visited him he would watch me run around the yard and name the lizards that I caught. I have so many terrific memories of him that I've forgotten them. Singing at the Poynter and at my cousin Shelly's wedding, fixing my bloody foot after I slipped on a sharp rock, telling me stories of WWII. I can go on and on. But the thing that sticks in my mind is his ability to make me smile. The last time I saw him, recently, I recall thinking to myself, wow I wish I could be more like that, more positive. He was a great light in my life and it makes me so proud to know that he was the same for many others. You can't replace a man like that, you can only look back and smile. I will carry these memories with me my whole life and try to live up to the high standard of being a man that he proved is possible. I miss him dearly, but I rest assured that a great man is looking down covering my six. Thank you for everything Grandpa Tommy.

Tommy Carden, better known as Grandpa Tommy, he was so sweet to me and loved my husband so much. He and Jason would floss together just because it got on grandma's nerves. He was always so funny and full of life. He loved grandma so much and cared for her so well. I know he is still watching over her to this day. We will all think of him and his smile regulary. That smile you never knew what he was thinking, but you could bet it was about Grandma Jean. His singing was great and he was so happy to sing for us every time we visited. I have hours and hours of him on video singing to the family. I am very glad I met Grandpa Tommy and spent time with him, he was, is, and will always be a special man.

Tommy’s generous spirit touched many lives in many ways. Just a simple greeting from his smiling face brightened our days. Fortunate ones shared stories and dreams with him. We will always have fond memories of him in our hearts.

Chuck and I were visiting up north when we got the news that Tommy had died, and I'm sorry to be so late in signing his book. I can sit here and envision Tommy saying, as he was fond of doing, that he would sing "at the drop of a hat, and you didn't even have to have a hat!" He was a dear, sweet man who could bring tears to my eyes when he filled the Great Hall with the beautiful Irish songs that my mother used to sing when I was young. One year on his birthday, Sandy LeDoux and I bought him a book about World War II. I put an inscription in the front that his mother would have been so proud of him that I'm sure she was smiling down at him from heaven. Tommy was the one with tears that time, but they were happy tears. He was one of the most endearing people that I've ever met and a true friend. I'll miss him greatly.

Tommy was a dear and thoughtful man and I have wonderful memories of him. Our family first met him at a Poynter picnic, 2 weeks after I began working here in 1992. When he heard that my husband Dick worked at Humana he asked him what could be done about a problem with his medication. Dick handled the small problem on Monday and from then on Tommy never failed to mention how wonderful Dick was!
We always kidded about the Wisconsin Badgers football team and the Green Bay Packers, but unlike other Poynterites...I was smart enough NOT to bet with Tommy.
I gave a pint of blood for Tommy when he had a bleeding ulcer. Scott Libin and Bob Steele gave at the same time. And Tommy always commented that he had a little bit of Jewish blood in him!
We will miss you Tommy and think of you with a smile!

Tommy was one of the nicest people I've ever met. One of the things I remember most about him was his love for Jean. Whenever he talked about her, which was quite often, his whole face lit up. I thought to myself that Jean was very blessed to be loved so much for so long by such a sweet man.
Tommy, thank you for being a friend to me and to my family for so many years.
