As a former newspaper reporter and someone who speaks to current newspaper reporters daily, this annual kick-in-the-pants career report is always disheartening. Yes, newspapers are struggling. Yes, layoffs are a very regular thing. But so many people in newspapers and in journalism in general love this profession anyway.

With today’s report from Career Cast noting that newspaper reporter again makes the worst of the worst jobs list, we heard a few responses from readers. In sum, they include resignation, dissent and some agreement.

Here’s what one reader shared in our comments:

But the “best” jobs sound like my idea of hell. Sitting in a cubicle crunching numbers for a spread sheet? No thanks. For my job yesterday I went to Clearwater Beach to watch sand sculptors at work for a story. Not sure if I had the best job or they did that day.

And here’s a collection of all those disagreements, with past and present journalists sharing why they love their work.
