Reported.ly, the social media reporting and verification organization, will suspend publication at the end of the month, it announced today.

Andy Carvin, Reported.ly’s editor in chief, said on Medium that the First Look Media-supported news organization founded in 2015 will no longer receive funding from the Pierre Omidyar-backed company.

Its future beyond the end of the month is still in doubt, Carvin said.

The team would love to find a new home for reported.ly, but we recognize the challenges that await us. Over the coming days and weeks, we’re going to explore our options, including re-establishing reported.ly at another news outlet or creating our own independent entity. Either solution would require the necessary funding for our work to continue; otherwise the team will have no choice but to go our separate ways.

Reported.ly made headlines in early 2015 for being an early adopter of distributed media, the practice of publishing on social accounts uncoupled from a central website.

As a series of big breaking news stories have broken in recent months — in Munich, Turkey and elsewhere — Reported.ly has been at the forefront of spotting rumors and hoaxes online and verifying information.
