On June 5, Arthur Sulzberger Jr. accepted the resignations of Howell Raines and Gerald Boyd, the two top editors at The New York Times. Former Executive Editor Joseph Lelyveld took over for an interim period that ended on July 31.
The Times broke the news at a 10:30 a.m. staff meeting in the New York newsroom on Thursday. Romenesko had ongoing updates. Here’s the first item he posted that day (originally published at 10:41 a.m.; updated at 11:31 a.m.) about the resignations.
The resignations and the turmoil that provoked them have renewed focus on a variety of issues in newsrooms around the country. Poynter is building a resource guide aimed at helping newsrooms wrestling with some of those issues: “Getting it Right — The Poynter Guide to Accuracy“. In addition, Poynter held a conference to address many of these issues in mid-July. Read more about the results.
