Below are links to Romenesko’s coverage of the Valerie Plame leak investigation, from Robert Novak’s 2003 column to Sunday’s New York Times’ stories about Judith Miller’s role in it.

New York Observer
Times deputy managing editor Jon Landman says when Judith Miller finally turned in her first-person piece late on Friday morning, reporters had to race to re-report details to reflect her assertions, with less than a day to spare before deadline. “It was very frustrating,” he tells Gabriel Sherman.

Boston Phoenix
Mark Jurkowitz writes: “Interspersed throughout the [Times’ Miller case] story were damning flashes of communication and ego issues, some of which even harken eerily back to the systemic internal problems that came to light in wake of the Jayson Blair fiasco.” (He has ten examples.) Jurkowitz says there’s plenty in today’s revelations to suggest the paper “has paid a major price for again failing in its oversight of a strong-willed reporter who had generated internal skepticism about work habits and work product. And that sounds all too familiar.”

Ex-CBSer claims there’s a scandal hidden in Miller’s report
Romenesko Letters
Retired CBS News correspondent Bill Lynch says the scandal is Judith Miller‘s revelation that she was granted a Defense Department security clearance while embedded with the WMD search team in Iraq. “This is as close as one can get to government licensing of journalists and the New York Times — if it knew — should never have allowed her to become so compromised,” he writes. “In my opinion, Miller violated her duty to report the truth by accepting a binding obligation to withhold key facts the government deems secret, even when that information might contradict the reportable ‘facts.'”

Sesno: Did NYT higher-ups suppress, distort Miller coverage?
CNN.com
From Sunday morning’s “Reliable Sources”:
FRANK SESNO: This is a very serious question that’s not answered in the [NYT’s Miller case] article — were editorial higher-ups and were the corporate lawyers at The New York Times in some way leaning on suppressing and in ways distorting coverage from the news section?
HOWARD KURTZ: Arianna Huffington, in this lengthy piece this morning, Judy Miller is quoted as saying there was another source besides “Scooter” Libby that she dealt with on the Valerie Plame situation. She doesn’t recall who that source was. Looking at her notes and seeing the notation “Valerie Flame.” She got the name wrong. Do you buy this notion that she doesn’t recall who this other source was?
ARIANNA HUFFINGTON: No, of course not, Howie. In fact, I think this is the major unanswered question. We still don’t know who her source was when it comes to revealing the identify of Valerie Plame. And to say that she does not recall is really as convincing as having Woodward and Bernstein saying that they do not recall who Deep Throat was.

“An intrepid reporter whom editors found hard to control”
New York Times

From New York Times’ report on the Judith Miller case: “Asked what she regretted about The Times’ handling of the matter, Jill Abramson, a managing editor, said: ‘The entire thing.'” More from the story:
* “Inside the newsroom, [Miller] was a divisive figure. A few colleagues refused to work with her. …Douglas Frantz, who succeeded [Stephen] Engelberg as investigative editor, recalled that Ms. Miller once called herself ‘Miss Run Amok.'”
* “[Times executive editor Bill] Keller said the case was not ideal: ‘I wish it had been a clear-cut whistle-blower case. I wish it had been a reporter who came with less public baggage.'”
* “Once Ms. Miller was jailed, her lawyers were in open conflict about whether she should stay there. She had refused to reopen communications with [Cheney chief of staff Scooter] Libby for a year, saying she did not want to pressure a source into waiving his confidentiality.”
* “[Publisher Arthur] Sulzberger said it was impossible to know whether Ms. Miller could have struck a deal a year earlier, as at least four other journalists had done.”
> Miller writes: “My notes indicate that well before Mr. Wilson published his critique, Mr. Libby told me that Mr. Wilson’s wife may have worked on unconventional weapons at the C.I.A. My notes do not show that Mr. Libby identified Mr. Wilson’s wife by name.”
> Keller owes readers, at the minimum, an apology “instead of merely hailing his paper’s long-delayed analysis and saying that readers can make of it what they will,” says Greg Mitchell. (Editor & Publisher)

SEPTEMBER 30, 2005
New York Times reporter Judith Miller testified before the grand jury Friday about the leaking of a CIA operative’s name, then spoke with reporters about her experience. Miller’s testimony came a day after she was released from jail, following a waiver offered “voluntarily and personally” by I. Lewis Libby, Vice President Dick Cheney’s chief of staff, the source whose identity she was protecting. Miller said Libby made clear that he genuinely wanted her to testify.
