    This journalist wants to find out if people will pay for ad-free news

    When Ryan Nakashima covered the media for the Associated Press, he saw the entertainment industry do something new. For a subscription fee, you could skip the ads.

    At the same time, digital news sites were becoming littered with pop-ups and auto-play ads. News organizations weren’t trying the ad-free or ad-light models the entertainment industry was testing.

    When disaster strikes, drones can go where reporters can't

    As Hurricane Irma churned inland over the Florida peninsula in early September, photojournalist Brian Emfinger readied his drone. After the eye passed over Naples, calming the 100-mph-plus winds and torrential rains, he lifted off.  

    “Five minutes later, I’m flying over these destroyed mobile homes,” he said. “Fifteen minutes later, I tweet out the first picture.”

    ProPublica announces 7 newsrooms for its Local Reporting Network

    ProPublica announced the seven newsrooms that will make up its year-long ProPublica Local Reporting Network. 

    Those newsrooms include daily newspapers:

    — The (Baton Rouge, Louisiana,) Advocate

    — Charleston (West Virginia) Gazette-Mail 

    — Santa Fe New Mexican

    — South Bend (Indiana) Tribune

    — The (Carbondale, Illinois) Southern Illinoisan

    The (Vale, Oregon) Malheur Enterprise, a weekly, and WMFE, Orlando, Florida's public radio station, were also selected.

    For the nonprofit publisher, it seems as if everyone is in your space, seeking the same foundation money, staging rival end-of-year fundraising drives.

    Maria Archangelo wanted to try something different. Her decision kept her up at night, and she wondered if she’d be fired. The move, earlier this year, was a stretch from her editorial mission of providing school and education news where others didn’t go, but she felt she needed to do something striking.
