It’s been a year since the pandemic shut down workplaces — including newsrooms — leaving journalists and newsroom leaders to figure out how to cover their community safely and effectively while working remotely. What have we learned over the last 12 months? What have we lost? What was gained? And how will we use the insights learned to move forward to create workplaces and newsrooms of the future?

Join Poynter senior faculty Joie Chen as she speaks with Emily Barr, president and CEO of Graham Broadcasting, and Kristen Hare, editor of Locally at Poynter for the first On Poynt session in a new four-part series about the newsroom of the future.

Barr will talk about the evolving logistics and technology for her own station group, as well as how the relationship between corporate and employees has changed. Hare will add perspective from text-based and digital newsrooms, outlining the ways many are operating out of different kinds of workspaces and the new ideas they are trying. Journalists, educators and citizens interested in the future of news are invited to tune in for this free On Poynt session on Wednesday, April 7 at noon Eastern time.

About On Poynt

In 2021, our On Poynt series will feature timely interviews with journalists for the story behind the story of the latest breaking news, moderated by Poynter experts.

In a four-part special series, On Poynt will team up with Poynter’s “Locally” to consider the Newsroom of the Future and the challenges ahead as more journalists are able to return to the newsroom.

These sessions will address critical questions for news organizations and journalists in the months ahead, such as: what’s been lost and gained with workplace culture, funding models and the physical newsroom.

These sessions are free to attend and will include time for Q&A at the end.

This On Poynt takes place Wednesday, April 7, 2021, from noon to 12:45 p.m. Eastern. A recording will be available within 72 hours.

During the first 30 minutes of the On Poynt, Joie Chen will interview Emily Barr and Kristen Hare on what they’ve learned in a year leading and studying remote journalism. They will discuss the common themes and takeaways. During the final 15 minutes, audience members will have an opportunity to get their questions answered.
