In the four years since fact-checkers around the world first gathered in London for the inaugural Global Fact-Checking Summit, a lot has happened in the fight against misinformation.
Fact-checking took on even more relevance in the coverage of the United States presidential election in 2016, the circulation of deceptive content on social media platforms became common and —in response— news organizations, technology companies and audiences joined efforts to stop misinformation and spread reliable and verified information.
Despite the strides we’ve made, there’s still a lot of work to do. And this summer, representatives from fact-checking organizations, media outlets, NGOs and academia will gather to discuss the future of this field of accountability journalism.
The International Fact-Checking Network is pleased to announce that Global Fact 5 will be held in Rome on June 20-22 2018 in the wonderful setting of St. Stephen's School at the Aventine Hill.
Global Fact 5 will address some of the most important issues in fact-checking and misinformation, including:
- Reaching out with facts to skeptical audiences.
- New formats for fact-checking.
- Acceleration and automation of the fact-checking process.
- Fact-checking and the platforms
Global Fact 5 is free to attend. However, priority is given to participants from organizations that are actively conducting fact-checking. Please express your interest to attend no later than February 14, 2018. We will get back to you then with a response on participation.
Global Fact 5 will be hosted in partnership with Pagella Politica, the main political fact-checking website in Italy, and is made possible thanks to funding from the Duke Reporters’ Lab, the Omidyar Network and the Open Society Foundations.
Cape Town will host Global Fact 6 in 2019
This year, the IFCN is announcing not just one, but two host cities. Global Fact 6 will be held in Cape Town, South Africa, during the summer of 2019. This will be the first time the conference will be held in Africa, in recognition of the leadership of Africa Check in that region and beyond.
About Global Fact
Global Fact 4, held in Madrid on June 5-7 2017, brought together 188 people from 53 countries around the world. The attendee list increased by 70 from Global Fact 3 in Buenos Aires. The agenda included sessions about academic research on fact-checking, collaborative efforts around the world and automation. Global leaders in the field such as Africa Check, Chequeado, Factcheck.org, Full Fact, Libération Désintox, PolitiFact and The Washington Post Fact Checker were among the participants.
