ABC News has launched a new offering for the iPad that uses HTML5 to bridge some of the gap between a native app and a mobile Web site. Featuring an innovative “globe” interface reminiscent of a blog tag cloud, the app is available for free in the iTunes store.

David Kaplan writes that by using HTML5 within the app ABC should be able to ease the development costs when porting the app to other tablet devices.

“[VP of Product Development, ABC News Digital Isaac] Josephson said. ‘With HTML5, we don’t have to look outside and we don’t have to spend a lot of time and money to make changes. Plus, if we want to import it over to Android, there’s not a lot of work required either.’ “
