The Awl to start paying writers in January

The two-year-old site's founders will share their profits.
"Each month, we plan to lop off some portion of our income and share that money equally among the month's writers," says co-founder Choire Sicha. He points out that the model "doesn't reward pageview-hustling."

    From 1999 to 2011, Jim Romenesko maintained the Romenesko page for the Poynter Institute, a Florida-based non-profit school for journalists. Poynter hired him in August of 1999, after seeing his, a hobby site he started in May of 1999.
