Fourteen newsroom positions at the Cape Cod Times will shift to GateHouse Media’s new design center in Austin.
The newspaper reports its staffers will have the opportunity to move to Texas. Other Local Media Group newspapers, which are managed by GateHouse, will also make the move.
Here’s what GateHouse, which owns 78 daily newspapers and 235 weeklies, said in a press release announcing what it calls a Center for News & Design:
The facility’s services include existing print and digital offerings, such as centralized copy editing and page design for the company’s hundreds of publications. The facility also will support new platforms and initiatives.
The facility, which GateHouse says will employ more than 150 people by mid-2015, replaces the company’s two existing design centers, located in Rockford, Ill., and Framingham, Mass.
Poynter looked at the benefits and challenges of consolidated design centers in September. Among the obvious concerns: a severed connection to the communities you’re working for, if you were ever connected to them at all.
The Times newsroom is about 2,000 miles from Austin.
