Matthew Cooper Named New Editor of National Journal Daily
Ramped-Up Resources, New Major Garrett Column Continue Daily Vitalization

WASHINGTON, D.C., June 7, 2011 — National Journal Group announced today that Matthew Cooper has been named Editor of National Journal Daily and charged with continuing the evolution and vitalization of the Daily that began with National Journal’s relaunch last year. Since the relaunch, the Daily’s circulation has increased by 52%. Now, Cooper will lead a ramping up of Daily resources, including more reporters and editors focused on congressional coverage and a new column from esteemed congressional correspondent Major Garrett.

“This is a great day for National Journal Daily and for our subscribers,” said Ron Fournier, National Journal Group Editor-in-Chief. “The Daily’s mission is to arm Washington leaders every day with precisely what they need to know about Congress to succeed, whenever, wherever, and however they need it. Under Matt’s leadership, we’ll be able to hone in on that mission with even more energy and precision than we ever have. Matt understands every corner of D.C., and he’ll put that knowledge to work for Daily subscribers, ensuring every issue is full of the insight and actionable intelligence they can’t get anywhere else.”

“For over 20 years, National Journal Daily – and its earlier iteration, Congress Daily – has been essential for anyone trying to navigate Congress,” said Cooper. “I am proud to keep that tradition thriving while continuing to sharpen everything we deliver to make our subscribers the best-informed in Washington.”

In addition to Cooper’s new leadership, Garrett will add his veteran insights to the Daily in a new weekly column that takes subscribers behind the scenes – and beyond the talking points – with the congressional leadership. (Garrett will also continue his in-depth reporting with the rest of the congressional team in the Daily, in National Journal magazine, and at NationalJournal.com.)

“National Journal Daily users are hungry for information that gets them behind the closed doors in Congress and gives them the strategic advantage they need for success,” said Fournier. “That defines the very core of Major Garrett’s work, and we’re going to make sure our subscribers get the full benefit of his experience and access.”

Cooper, who joined National Journal in September 2010 as Managing Editor of White House coverage, has an extensive record of experience covering all aspects of Washington. He has served as White House Correspondent for U.S. News & World Report, Deputy Washington Bureau Chief for Newsweek, Deputy Washington Bureau Chief and White House Correspondent for Time and Politics Editor for Time.com. He has also been an Editor for Washington Monthly and The New Republic, Washington Editor for Conde Nast Portfolio, a politics correspondent for The Atlantic, and Editor-at-Large for TalkingPointsMemo.com.
