Does Gannett want to get rid of USA Today?

According to the Gannett Blog chatter, Gannett may be considering either selling USA Today or spinning it off as an independent company.'s John Reinan tells Romenesko that his "RIP, USA Today" post is based on a comment from "a historically reliable tipster" who "has accurately foretold several major events in recent years – layoffs, consolidations, etc."
