About Foursquare
Foursquare was offline Monday afternoon and evening as the service apparently stumbled under the weight of its own rapid growth. The outage, which began after noon EDT on Monday, lasted through 11:30 p.m. and affected Foursquare.com and its mobile apps.

The watchdog site “About Foursquare” noted a tweet by Foursquare founder Dennis Crowley indicating that the source of the outage was “too many checkins.” About Foursquare reported that the company has been working to grow its server capacity in recent months:

“Foursquare spent the summer working mainly on scaling issues, and have just recently gotten back to releasing major new features and updates, including foursquare 2.0. The service remained relatively stable throughout, with the next longest outage being six hours in May.”
