Google drops its newspaper archive project

The Boston Phoenix

Google told partners in its News Archive project that it would cease accepting, scanning, and indexing microfilm and other archival material from newspapers, reports The Boston Phoenix. The search giant is instead focusing on "newer projects that help the industry, such as Google One Pass," a content payment system.  First announced in 2008, the News Archive project sought to digitize millions of pages of pre-digital news publications so they could be indexed and searched.
