How political reporters can mine social media for tips on politicians, campaigns

As the political season heats up, politicians are turning to social media to share news about their campaigns and connect with supporters.

Dallas Morning News Reporter Theodore Kim, who recently wrote about politicians' use of Facebook and Twitter, regularly uses these sites while reporting on politics.

During a live chat, Kim talked with Poynter's Butch Ward about how political reporters can use social media to find leads and gain insight into politicians and voters. They gave some examples of how politicians and political reporters are using social media, and offered pointers on how to verify information you find on social networks.
