PC manufacturer Lenovo will not build any digital tablets for the current Android 2.2 “Froyo” operating system, preferring to wait (possibly until next summer) for the next major release, called “Honeycomb.”

This follows a Google executive’s statement that Android 2.2 is “not optimized for use on tablets” and that Android Market won’t be available on devices that don’t allow apps to run properly.

The finer details of Android OS versions and tablet development are of interest to publishers awaiting a legitimate competitor for Apple’s iPad. Earlier this month several major publishers announced plans to develop news apps for the forthcoming Samsung Galaxy tablet, which has a 7-inch display and uses the Android 2.2 operating system. The tablet is expected to launch next month with a price around $600.
