Magazine writer tries to recoup expenses through reader donations

Paige Williams put "Finding Dolly Freed" online -- with a SUPPORT THE JOURNALIST donation button -- after it was rejected by The New Yorker, Texas Monthly, New York Times Magazine and others. So far, she's received over $400 for the piece, which cost about $2,000 to produce. "Frankly, I didn't expect a dime," she says. "I really didn't."

    From 1999 to 2011, Jim Romenesko maintained the Romenesko page for the Poynter Institute, a Florida-based non-profit school for journalists. Poynter hired him in August of 1999, after seeing his MediaGossip.com, a hobby site he started in May of 1999.
