Newspaper Guild questions funding of Union Leader publisher's trip to Afghanistan

Union Leader publisher Joseph McQuaid and a photographer are in Afghanistan to report on a New Hampshire National Guard unit. McQuaid writes: "BAE Systems, Next Step Orthotics and Dean Kamen's DEKA Research, all of which do great work with the Guard and U.S. military overall, readily agreed to help underwrite our trip." Newspaper Guild president Bernie Lunzer says that's "pushing the envelope of journalistic ethics."

    From 1999 to 2011, Jim Romenesko maintained the Romenesko page for the Poynter Institute, a Florida-based non-profit school for journalists. Poynter hired him in August of 1999, after seeing his MediaGossip.com, a hobby site he started in May of 1999.
