Oregonian publisher Stickel retires at 87

Fred Stickel, who has led the Newhouse family's Oregonian for 35 years, tells employees: "I am 87 years old. I love this newspaper and the essential role it plays in Oregon and this community. But it is time for me to retire and make way for new leadership." His son, Patrick, will serve as interim publisher.

    From 1999 to 2011, Jim Romenesko maintained the Romenesko page for the Poynter Institute, a Florida-based non-profit school for journalists. Poynter hired him in August of 1999, after seeing his MediaGossip.com, a hobby site he started in May of 1999.
