Portland Press Herald drops freelance columnist over plagiarism

Leigh Donaldson took "a substantial amount of content from a column published on AlterNet.org," says a Press Herald editor's note. But Anneli Rufus, who wrote the AlerNet piece, says Donaldson "also pilfered material from other reporters' stories at AlterNet and other venues for years, as a fellow journalist friend of mine discovered via some online detective work."

    From 1999 to 2011, Jim Romenesko maintained the Romenesko page for the Poynter Institute, a Florida-based non-profit school for journalists. Poynter hired him in August of 1999, after seeing his MediaGossip.com, a hobby site he started in May of 1999.
