The Poynter Institute and Facebook Launch Innovative Journalism Certificate

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (April 10, 2017) – The Poynter Institute, a global leader in journalism, and Facebook announced today the release of a 2017 three-course certificate program for journalists.

The curriculum is part of The Facebook Journalism Project, a new initiative to establish stronger ties between Facebook and the news industry.

With this free program, Facebook and Poynter seek to make it easier for journalists to use Facebook and Instagram in their daily work — from newsgathering to storytelling to engaging with their followers.

“We’re honored, indeed, that Facebook is working with Poynter on this innovative certificate,” said Poynter President Tim Franklin. “Poynter’s prominence as a voice for independent journalism combined with our expertise in training makes us the perfect partner to provide this high-quality, relevant program.”

The three-course certificate program designed by Poynter and Facebook combines product knowledge, case studies and tips from Facebook with journalistic guidance from Poynter. Course enrollees who pass Poynter’s assessment will receive a certificate of completion, recognized by both Facebook and Poynter, via Blueprint, Facebook’s e-learning system. The courses will be regularly updated to reflect new products, features, case studies and learnings.

This innovative project builds on Poynter’s Certificate of Proficiency program, launched in 2010, that is designed to measure an individual’s knowledge of the industry’s essential skills and best practices, including a Building Your Brand on Social Media certificate, a valuable credential for many journalists and other professional communicators.

More than 20 media companies and journalism organizations have partnered with Poynter in the last year for training. Those partners include Google, USAToday Network, Participant Media, Univision, The Associated Press and the American Society of Business Publication Editors.
