ProPublica paid out $6.4 million in salaries, benefits in 2009

That's up from $4 million in 2008. ProPublica's Form 990 discloses that editor-in-chief Paul Steiger made $571,687 in salary, plus $13,430 in other compensation last year. Treasurer/secretary Richard Tofel's 2009 salary was $320,978 and managing editor Stephen Engelberg was paid $343,463.

    From 1999 to 2011, Jim Romenesko maintained the Romenesko page for the Poynter Institute, a Florida-based non-profit school for journalists. Poynter hired him in August of 1999, after seeing his MediaGossip.com, a hobby site he started in May of 1999.
