Student photojournalist who invoked shield law outs himself in contest entry

A San Francisco State University student photographer who witnessed a murder on a San Francisco street and was ruled covered by California's reporter shield law has won the Gold/Documentary award in the College Photographer of the Year contest. He wasn't identified in news reports and court documents last year because of safety concerns, but Alex Welsh used his name when he entered the contest.

    From 1999 to 2011, Jim Romenesko maintained the Romenesko page for the Poynter Institute, a Florida-based non-profit school for journalists. Poynter hired him in August of 1999, after seeing his MediaGossip.com, a hobby site he started in May of 1999.
