Washingtonian Associate Publisher Susan Farkas has become publisher of the magazine, filling a void left by the creation of a new position.

In a memo Tuesday, outgoing president and publisher Catherine Merrill Williams told employees she’s taking on the title of CEO as Farkas steps into her old job.

Williams praised Farkas’ business acumen in the memo:

In the last year and half Susan has proven herself an extremely savvy and capability sales leader. To date our advertising revenue is up 29% over last year (which greatly helps offset the challenges we and other magazines are facing on newsstand).

Washingtonian Editor Michael Schaffer, Chief Operating Officer Michael Johnson and Associate Publisher Rebecca Schwartz McFarland will continue to report to Williams, according to the memo.
