Twitter launches advertising-based promoted accounts

Twitter has launched a "promoted accounts" feature on that lets businesses pay to be included in the "who to follow" recommendations on the site. Ben Parr writes that the recommendations are targeted at users likely to be receptive to the suggestions:

"Promoted Accounts utilizes algorithms that calculate whether you’d be interested in a specific promoted account before displaying it in the 'Suggestions for You' section. Twitter’s example is Xbox, which will be displayed to users that follow gaming-related accounts, but aren’t following @xbox."

Parr reported previously that the promoted accounts placement will cost advertisers around $100,000. The feature is part of a string of recent revenue initiatives, including promoted tweets and promoted trends, both of which also integrate advertiser content into the site's social media experience.
