The year's top tweet was President Obama's "Four More Years" message on election night, sure, but Twitter's year-end roundup goes beyond the obvious stuff. Aside from what the service calls "Golden Tweets," its package looks at events that generated the most microblogging: the summer Olympics (for which Twitter partnered with NBC), the U.S. presidential election, Euro 2012.
And its "Only on Twitter" roundup includes some pretty sweet moments, like this photo from an underwater camera at the Olympics:

And James Cameron's tweet from the ocean deep:
Just arrived at the ocean's deepest pt. Hitting bottom never felt so good. Can't wait to share what I'm seeing w/ you @deepchallenge

Also, you can finish stuffing your virtual stocking with this list of the year's top trends and hashtags. Enjoy the holidays, #nowplaying, you've earned it!
On Friday BuzzFeed's Andrew Kaczynski compiled a list of media organizations' most popular tweets. Kaczynski took his data from a site called Favstar; according to that this was Poynter's most popular tweet this year:

Topsy tells a different story.
Related: Twitter added photo filters to its mobile apps Monday. Poynter's Jeff Sonderman wrote about what the Twitter-Instagram war says about online services' business models.
