Medill professor Douglas Foster accepted, then declined, the directorship of USC Annenberg, the University of Southern California’s journalism school.
“It was an honor to be considered for such a prestigious job and my turning it down in the end means no disrespect for the leader of the school or the school in any way,” Foster told Patrick Svitek of The Daily Northwestern.
Svitek writes that Foster said “it became clear after follow-up emails over the weekend with Annenberg officials that there were a ‘couple of misunderstandings about some pretty big items on the school’s agenda.'”
Foster told Los Angeles Times reporter Larry Gordon there was a “mismatch” in vision.
He declined to specify what details caused him to change his mind two days later, and stressed that final contract papers with the USC Annenberg School of Communication and Journalism had not been drawn up or signed.
Former Los Angeles Times Editor Michael Parks, who previously served as interim director and director of Annenberg, will again be its interim director, Christina Schoellkopf reports in the Daily Trojan.
Geneva Overholser announced she would leave the directorship of Annenberg last November.
Correction: An earlier version of this story said Overholser left Annenberg in November. She announced her departure then and will leave in mid-June.
