- Senior Editor and Director of Leadership and Development, McClatchy
Anders Gyllenhaal, the chair of Poynter’s National Advisory Board, was recently named Senior Editor and Director of Leadership and Development at McClatchy. Previously, he served as McClatchy’s Vice President of News and Washington Editor since November 2010. Before his corporate appointment, Gyllenhaal was the senior vice president and executive editor of the Miami Herald from 2007 to 2010. He has led two other McClatchy newsrooms over his career: from 2002 to 2007 he was editor and senior vice president of the Minneapolis Star Tribune under McClatchy ownership, and from 1997 to 2007 he was executive editor of The News & Observer in Raleigh, N.C.
Gyllenhaal began his journalism career in 1975 as a reporter for the Daily News Record in Harrisonburg, Va. In 1977, he moved to The Press in Atlantic City, N.J., and joined the Miami Herald in 1979, where he worked as a local news reporter, statewide correspondent, investigative reporter and Broward County editor. In 1991, he moved to The News & Observer, working as a metro editor and managing editor before becoming executive editor.
Gyllenhaal served as chairman of the Pulitzer Prize Board in 2009-10 and was a member of the Pulitzer Prize Board from 2001 to 2010.
