- Journalism and Women Symposium (JAWS)
I am so honored to become president of Journalism and Women Symposium (JAWS). This organization has inspired me to strive for greatness in myself -- and in the news business. We offer webinars, regional events and a truly transformative experience at JAWS camp each year, so join us at jaws.org.
Little bit about me: I'm a former newspaper reporter turned social media trainer and branding expert. My first and true love is all things journalism. I am a tenured journalism professor, truly passionate about inspiring tomorrow's journalists to think outside the box at SF State University.
My career, fueled by dedicated staff and faculty at USC, has taken me from the Associated Press in Los Angeles to the San Francisco Chronicle, where I served as reporter, Open Forum editor and Deputy Reader's Representative before being wooed into full-time academia. In 2001, I was the recipient of the Fulbright grant and in 2000, I attended the University of Michigan as a Knight-Wallace journalism fellow. In 2013, I was chosen as one of the 12 smartest women of color on Twitter.
