It is as if a huge burden has been lifted from the shoulders of this community with yesterday’s resignation of Bernard Cardinal Law.

And we do mean the entire community, not just the Archdiocese of Boston, although surely members of the Catholic laity, its priests and its religous orders have had to bear the greatest share of the pain of this scandal, this shame.

But there isn’t an institution – political, social or religious – that hasn’t been impacted. This tragedy – and that is what it has been for so many families – has been sucking the air out of this community for far too long, crowding out other issues and other needs.
