A clean slate, a fresh perspective and absolutely no whiff of malfeasance may make for a short list of potential successors to Bernard Cardinal Law, church watchers predict.

“It’s going to be hard to find a bishop who’s squeaky clean,” said Tom Fox, publisher of The National Catholic Reporter. “You simply don’t know what’s in the closet of someone who’s been living in this environment for so long.

“There’s no indication at this point that anyone has the leadership potential to force change.”
