The Rev. Redmond Raux, Patrick Air Force Base’s newly assigned Catholic chaplain, was “devastated” after being accused of child abuse and was ordered into psychotherapy after the allegations were made.

“Raux was puzzled by the allegations, devastated by them,” said a confidential memorandum issued by a review board for the Archdiocese of Boston after interviewing him on Feb. 11, 1993. “Toward the end of the questioning, he broke into tears and mentioned that he was concerned that 10 years of a good track record didn’t seem to have any impact on this matter,” according to 457 pages of documents obtained from the private custodian of Boston’s public court records.

Those involved with the story — Raux, officials at Patrick AFB and the Boston Archdiocese — refused to comment for this story. Raux’s attorney, Timothy O’Neill, was out of his Boston office and unreachable.

In 1996, nearly 10 years after the alleged incident took place and a $200,000 settlement was paid to the complainant, then-Boston Archdiocese Cardinal Bernard Law cleared the priest, saying “the Review Board and the Delegate have determined that no sexual misconduct occurred.”
