A church lawyer was named Friday as the new bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Lexington, a post vacant since the previous bishop resigned in June after being accused of sexual abuse.

Monsignor Ronald William Gainer, 55, of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Allentown, Pa., replaces the Rev. J. Kendrick Williams, who has denied the allegations against him and has since moved from his home in Lexington.

Gainer was named by the Vatican on Friday as his replacement.
