To the Editor:

In your Dec. 14 front-page news analysis about the continuing problems in the American Catholic Church, you quote A. W. Richard Sipe, a former Benedictine monk, as saying, “Law officers and D.A.’s around the country all say the same thing, that the church is fighting the examination of documents tooth and nail.”

That has not been my experience.

As far back as April 27, the head of the Brooklyn Diocese, Bishop Thomas V. Daily, and I executed a memorandum of understanding. That document requires the bishop to promptly report to my office, without prior review, all allegations of sexual misconduct by priests working within the diocese.

To date, information forwarded by the Brooklyn Diocese has resulted in two indictments of assigned priests, one for sex abuse and one for rape.
