“All I can say is Neil and Christy Edgar’s adopted children believe what was being done was a matter of religion and that their parents are good people,” said Wyandotte County District Attorney Nick Tomasic during a press conference Thursday.

Felony child abuse charges were filed against seven Kansas City, Kan., residents by Tomasic’s office late Wednesday evening as part of the ongoing investigation into the murder of 9-year-old Brian Edgar.

Chasity Boyd, 19; Julia Edgar-Montgomery, 54; Christy Y. Edgar, 46; Renita D. Allen-Jackson, 40; Idella A. Horton, 22; Patricia A. Walker, 44, and Barbara Clark, 45, are accused of systematically torturing nine children at five KCK locations between October 2002 and Jan. 3.

According to arrest warrants, the women abused Christina Edgar, 9, on four occasions. Her brother, Martez, 13, was abused three times, followed by single instances for Brian Edgar and parishioner Perry Coleman.

The defendants are members of God’s Creation Outreach Ministry, 817 Central Ave., the church the Edgars headed. Attempts by The Kansan to contact Dr. Clifford Jackson, the interim head of God’s Creation, or the church were not returned.
