To gain a broader perspective, I talked with the Poynter Institute’s Bob Steele, who is renowned for his work and guidance on journalism ethics. Steele is the Nelson Poynter Scholar for Journalism Values at the St. Petersburg, Fla., institute, which conducts training for journalists.
What promise did our committee hold, I asked? And how could we maximize its potential?
“Ethics is, of course, an underpinning of professionalism,” he said. “It’s wise to have continually substantive, purposeful conversations about ethics in the newsroom. The idea of an ethics committee gives you one meaningful vehicle to support and stage those conversations.
