Olga Rudenko reports that at least 40 journalists were injured during protests in Ukraine Sunday. Joseph Sywenkyj, an American photographer who works in Ukraine, was among them, a spokesperson for The New York Times confirms in an email to Poynter. Sywenkyj shoots for the Times among other outlets.
Sywenkyj “was injured with shrapnel,” Danielle Rhoades Ha writes. “He received medical treatment and is out of the hospital.”
Rudenko says Serhiy Supinskiy, a photographer for Agence France-Presse, “was attacked by a riot police officer” who “deliberately hit his photography equipment, and destroyed his flash and lens.” Other journalists were injured, Rudenko writes, including one photographer who said a police officer “kicked him in the kidney area.”
The protests followed Ukraine President Viktor Yanukovych’s refusal to sign a trade deal with the European Union.
