The Baltimore Sun Media Group has purchased The Capital in Annapolis and the Carroll County Times, the Sun reported on Thursday.
“The Capital and the Carroll County Times are wonderful newspapers and successful media businesses that have long provided vital news and information to residents in their regions,” said Timothy E. Ryan, publisher, president and CEO of the Baltimore Sun Media Group. “We look forward to using BSMG’s capabilities to build upon that tradition of excellent service to readers, advertisers and the community.”
According to the Sun, the financial terms of the purchases weren’t disclosed. In March, Poynter’s Andrew Beaujon wrote about the Baltimore Sun Media Group’s purchase of City Paper, Baltimore’s alt-weekly.
The two newspapers in the latest purchase were bought from Landmark Publishing Group, based in Norfolk, Va., according to the Sun. Landmark also owns The Virginian-Pilot.
The Capital has a Sunday print circulation of about 34,000 and a daily circulation of 29,000. Its community newspapers combine for a weekly circulation of almost 88,000. The Carroll County Times was founded in 1911. It was published twice a week when Landmark purchased it in 1974. It began publishing seven days a week in 1987.
The Carroll County Times has a Sunday circulation of about 25,000 and a daily circulation of 21,000. Its community publications combine for a weekly circulation of about 116,000 and its monthly publications combine for 162,000.
